How to Find the Right Real Estate Agent for Your Needs

It’s easy to see real estate agents as go-betweens who gobble up a few thousand dollars for overseeing a measly transaction, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The right real estate agent makes all the difference in the world. The only question is, do you know how to find the best agent for the job?

Here’s What to Look for in an Agent

There are lots of different ways to find a real estate agent. You can do some research online, ask a friend, or contact the closest agency and ask them to get you in touch with someone. But regardless of how you come into contact with different agents, you need to make sure that you’re carefully evaluating them.

Here are some specific things to look for:

1. Trustworthiness

Honesty and transparency are huge. If you can’t trust your agent, then you’re in for a horrible experience. While it’s not always possible to judge an individual’s trustworthiness upon meeting them, you can ask around and get a feel for what others think. An agent’s reputation follows him around for a long time, so you won’t have any trouble finding out if an agent has shafted someone in the past. You’ll also be able to tell pretty quickly if an agent is respected by his peers.

2. Connections

Never underestimate the value of connections. As they say, it’s not what you know, but who you know. You need an agent who has lots of connections and can really take your home buying or selling experience to the next level.

Take Geoff and Andrea Lilienfeld of The Kay-Grant Group, a real estate agency in Scottsdale, Arizona, as an example. They have a good reputation in the Scottsdale real estate market , which leads to strong connections and more value for their clients. In fact, they’re able to offer clients access to home staging at roughly one-third of the price compared to other agents. It’s little perks like this that you want your agent to be able to offer. And, in most cases, perks come via connections.

3. Industry Experience

Every real estate transaction is unique. While a lot of the process remains the same from sale to sale, new little issues can always arise. An experienced agent is a wonderful asset because you can rest easy knowing they’ve seen just about everything. Past experience on how to handle these issues can save you a lot of trouble and frustration.

4. Local Reputation

What is the agent’s reputation around town? The good thing about realtors is that they tend to stay in the same area for long periods of time. If you’re considering a couple of different agents, try to find people who know them (either personally or professionally). They can help paint a better picture of what the agent is really like.

5. Comfort

There’s something to be said for trusting your gut. When you meet with the agent, does he make you feel comfortable? Are you put at ease? Or, on the contrary, do you feel uneasy? Even if you can’t put your finger on why, there’s nothing wrong with trusting your intuition. You’ll find that it’s right more often than not.

Find the Right Agent

There are hundreds, if not thousands of real estate agents in your vicinity. But when it comes to buying or selling a home, you can’t afford to hand this responsibility off to just anyone. You need an agent who will take care of you and maximize your money. Take your time, do your research, ask the right questions, and find the one who fits your family best.
