5 Tips for Dealing With Chronic Pain

Pain is never something you want to experience, but there’s a big difference between acute pain and chronic pain. With acute pain, there’s relief or healing at the end of the tunnel. With chronic pain, you suffer without knowing if you’ll ever feel better. If you deal with the latter, then you’re probably looking for relief in any form or fashion.

5 Tips for Coping

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t right. Sometimes doctors can find out what’s wrong in a matter of minutes. Other times, it takes years to isolate and identify the cause. But until you find healing, here are some tips for coping with your chronic pain.

  1. Don’t Suffer Alone

It’s easy to feel like you’re the only one. You go on social media and everyone is laughing, traveling, and having a good time; yet, here you are in constant pain and discomfort. But don’t believe the lies that others portray. The fact of the matter is that, at any given time, more than 100 million Americans are suffering from chronic pain. You aren’t alone, so don’t try to go through this ordeal by yourself. Find a friend, group, or some other supportive setting to connect with.

  1. Consider Chiropractic Care

Did you know that the nervous system controls almost everything in your body – including all cells, tissues, and organs? And because the spinal column houses and protects the nervous system, chronic pain is often tied back to issues in the spinal column.

“In short, because the body’s innate recuperative powers are controlled by the nervous system, the correction of spinal subluxations by a chiropractor can lead to a number of favorable results in patients suffering from various, seemingly unrelated health conditions,” Whole Body Health explains. If you’ve never pursued chiropractic care, now may be a good time to give it a shot.

  1. Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthy

There’s ample research to suggest that proper hydration improves physical symptoms related to chronic pain. In particular, dehydration has been shown to aggravate certain symptoms like headaches and back pain.

While a cup of coffee in the morning or a soda in the afternoon isn’t the end of the world, it certainly doesn’t help your symptoms. The diuretic effects of these drinks make them very poor sources of hydration. Try to reduce your intake, while simultaneously increasing your water intake.

  1. Don’t Obsess Over Symptoms

As a sufferer of chronic pain, it’s often challenging to do anything other than curl up in a ball and lament over your condition. The problem is that it’s easy for this to become your life.

There’s something to be said for being proactive and scheduling doctor’s appointments and trying new remedies, but don’t obsess over your symptoms so much so that it’s all you think about. You need to find other ways to channel your energy. As you spend less time focusing on the pain, you’ll notice that you feel slightly better.

  1. Don’t Feel Guilty

Many chronic pain sufferers reach a point where they begin to feel guilty. They feel as if there’s a reason for their pain or that they’re being disciplined or blamed for something they’ve done in the past. It’s easier said than done, but don’t let yourself go to that place. There’s absolutely no reason for feeling guilty and this sort of shame will only make you feel worse.

Relief is Possible

It’s important that you never lose hope. While chronic pain can leave you feeling helpless, there’s always the possibility for healing. Use the coping tips outlined in this article to stay on track and live a long and meaningful life that’s characterized by something other than pain.
