Toronto traffic stop nets decades-old expired plates

The year is 1990 … the Berlin wall had just fallen, and two Cold War foes succeeded in creating a reunified Germany.

The communist state of Yugoslavia collapsed, sparking decades of war and a portent of the fall of the Soviet Union one year later.

The Hubble Space Telescope rocketed into orbit in the belly of Space Shuttle Discovery, and an Ontario vehicle registration renewal sticker quietly expired.

Thirty years later, that same licence plate was spotted, attached to a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, by a member of Toronto Police’s Vision Zero Enforcement Team — an officer who, according to a TPS Traffic Services social media post — was only eight years old when the plates expired.

“The driver was a G1 driver who was charged with operating the vehicle without insurance, plates not authorized for the vehicle and G1 licence holder unaccompanied by qualified driver,” reads a post on the Traffic Services Instagram page.
