5 Tips for a Smooth Move

You’ll be hard-pressed to meet someone who enjoys moving. It’s a stressful process filled with a bunch of moving parts. If you want things to go smoothly and without any major issues, you need a plan.

5 Tips for a Smooth and Effortless Move

Research from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that, on average, 11.2 percent of Americans move over the course of a year. Over the course of a lifetime, the average person will move roughly 11.4 times. In other words, it’s a common activity that you would do well to master.

For most people, moving is filled with friction. This is usually a byproduct of a lack of organization and preparation. By developing a game plan, you can make moving less stressful. Here are a few helpful tips:

1.    Budget for the Cost

It doesn’t matter if it’s down the street or to the other side of the country – moving is expensive. Failing to account for these costs ahead of time may leave you feeling financially strained by the end of the process.

The best thing you can do is develop a moving budget ahead of time. Not only will this allow you to be more strategic with the money you spend, but it’ll also make you feel like you’re in control (as opposed to bleeding money).

2.    Choose the Right Season

Certain times of year are easier and more cost-effective for moving than others. While spring is typically a busy moving season, summer is when things normally slow down a bit.

“This means you may possibly get a discounted rate when you hire any type of professionals for the move, like movers, painters, lawn care, and much more,” Beattie Development explains. “Even if it’s the same price as during the winter, you’ll be able to get them booked ASAP instead of waiting weeks like you would have to during high season.”

The same is true when you move during the week. Whereas weekends are generally busy periods for moving companies, weekdays have less demand. If you can get a couple of days off from work in the middle of the week, this is the best time to move.

3.    Use the Right Moving Supplies

The right moving supplies can make all the difference in the world. If you don’t have a lot of experience moving, be sure to do some research and figure out which supplies are right for you.

While you may initially think you need to go out and buy a bunch of cardboard boxes, hold off until you have a plan. You may find that you can pack away a lot of items in original boxes, dresser drawers, or plastic bins and storage containers that you already have on hand.

4.    Become an Expert Packer

Packing can seem painful and annoying, but doing it right will ensure a much easier and more seamless move-in process on the backend.

The biggest key is to clearly label your boxes. Every box should have a label that tells you exactly where it goes in the new house. This will make move-in extremely easy and efficient.

When it comes to last minute packing, take your time and avoid taking shortcuts to speed the process along. As professional mover Jennifer Sunberg suggests, “Have a wardrobe box available the morning of the move. The last things you’ll pack will be the bed linens, comforters, and pillows you sleep with. Put these items in the wardrobe box, so they’ll be easy to find when you’re ready to collapse after a day of moving.”

5.    Have an Unloading Strategy

If you’ve been organized with your packing and labeling, unloading will be fairly easy. The key is to make sure you have a plan. Start by setting up the items you’ll need right away – such as the refrigerator, microwave, dishes and utensils, mattress and bedding, and clothing. Once you get all of the necessities out of the way, you can begin the process of decorating and organizing.

Putting it All Together

Moving probably isn’t something you’ll ever look forward to, but it doesn’t have to be something you detest. By utilizing some of the tips and tricks in this article, you can enjoy a much more efficient and frictionless process.
